Sérum 1.47 is tuned to the refractive index of glass. Dip the pipette in and it vanishes. On skin it does the same: no film, no shine.*

01 · THE INDEX
A glass rod vanishes in a liquid of the same index.
Light bends whenever it crosses from one material into another. Make two materials bend it by exactly the same amount and the boundary between them stops existing, optically speaking. Pyrex in glycerin is the classroom version. We tuned our serum to n = 1.47 so it does the same on skin: it's there, and you don't see it.*
Bottle4 mm flint glass. Polished window at the front, satin-etched at the back, so the serum glows.
Base12 mm of solid glass with a lens ground into it. VITRÈNE is engraved inside.
Pipetteborosilicate, n 1.474. Hence the vanishing.
Collarunglazed porcelain, turned and fired in Caldas da Rainha.
Turns the bottle from the front (0°) to the side (90°).

02 · THE FORMULA
Six ingredients. Nothing to see.
A short list, poured slowly. Every ingredient was chosen for what it does and for how little it moves the index. Anything that would cloud it, scent it or leave a film stayed out.

Ingredient
%
Why
Glycerin
6.0%
The humectant that set the index. Holds water in the top layers of skin.
Niacinamide
4.0%
Evens tone and supports the barrier. Dissolves perfectly clear.
Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5)
2.0%
Soothes and softens. Adds slip, not shine.
Hyaluronic acid, 3 weights
1.5%
High, medium and low molecular weights hydrate at different depths of the surface.
Ectoin
1.0%
A trick borrowed from desert microbes for holding on to water in dry air.
Squalane, micro-dispersed
1.0%
Dispersed fine enough to stay clear. Supple, never slick.
Base: water, propanediol. pH 5.4. No fragrance, no essential oils, no silicones. Concept formula for a fictional product.

Vitrène is an optical-skincare atelier on Rua da Boavista. We make four products and one set, in glass you'll want to keep. The name comes from vitre, a pane of glass: something you look through, not at.
